Native Stories, Myths, and Legends of Nordlys

Since the Beginning, the world of Nordlys has been rich with story and tales of woe. The Book Keeper has long since recorded these tales and held them close. They are precious gems passed down from the first Paragons, long before they were scribbled into books. Once told around campfires to keep the dark at bay, and now enjoyed from the special trove of the Keeper's Illorrium. All you require is an open mind.

Now, go forth and find all that these stories have to offer.

The Sleeping Daemon

There is a basic knowledge of the snow-locked north and those that inhabit this sacred ground. Survive in numbers. Respect the wild. And never cross the Wastes alone. For deep in the heart of the Western Approach lies a shadow hidden beneath the glacier. The tales of Northern natives speak of how the Mother was chased into the expanse of endless ice and snow by a daemon, sent by no one other than Cosmos himself in their quarrels. Halla, ever the compassionate, the empathetic, did not slay this monstrous creature, but instead sung it a lullaby. The creature fell into a cursed slumber, locked within the glacier itself, vowed to fulfill it's purpose and trapped.

Since then, those who have dared venture across the Wastes whisper of a beast slithering beneath the ice, rumbling in the frozen tundra. Though the tales tell of the sleeping curse, many who have Crossed without a Northern native have been said to fall into a slumber, never to awaken, thus they perish and are never to return again.

Yet, those who have found themselves lucky and sane have told of the daemon's whispers of death that creep along the Approach, it's vow still fresh on shadowed, bloody fangs.

Currently, seeking out the wilds of this tale is forbidden. It is advisable that all paragons that wish to cross the Western Approach of the tundra must have a Hinterlands Native as their guide, out of fear of falling victim to the sleeping curse.

The Standing Stones

Nestled within the Grimnodas Heartwood lies Leif's Lagoon — a pool of clear, crystal water of brightest aqua. Within the waters lies the Standing Stones, an uneven circle of curved structures that reach heavens-ward. Etched into the ancient surface are faded, illegible markings. Each stone face is covered in moss and blossoms that do not wilt with the change of season's tides. This place is revered as holy ground, and paragons far and wide feel a strange sense of déjà vu and familiarity here, whether they have been there before or not.

The Whisperers

Stories of ghouls have long since haunted the Heartwood of Grimnodas. Both foreign and natives alike have told their tales, yet only the elders know the truth of these creatures. Named the Whisperers for their soft, chilling cries in the misty woods, they appear as large, ghoulish nightwalkers. However, only the few and far between know that these ghosts are actually spirits — and long, forgotten children of Halla and Cosmos at that. They are sorrowful, temperamental beings that wander the Heartwood, and are best left alone.

The Capital of Morthalion

Keeper of the Tomes

Deep within the Great Library strolls a peculiar beast and though you will find many of his kind upon the surface, none are quite like this. With half-moon glasses, a hunchback and a twisted walking cane, the shape of an ancient grizzly bear shuffles slowly around the piled books of the Great Library. It is said that he sifts through each book word for word laboriously as if he is looking for one in particular — one volume upon thousands and thousands.

Within the books he walks among are the deepest, darkest secrets of the universe, the deepest magic that runs throughout Nordlys, and also the horror that dwells beneath the earth. The fables and tomes are host to a different manner of good or evil within each and may never be passed into the wrong hands. His name is unknown, though he is known in legend as the Keeper of the Tomes.

Currently, Paragons may not enter the Catacombs and interact with the Book Keeper. However, it is not unheard of for King Hessander IV to allow access to the Great Library, although few and far between.

The Emerald Tree

Legend tells of an underground cathedral in the White Ruins, the gateway to which has been sealed shut but the crumbling ruins that surround it. Amongst the sand that has sifted through sits a single olive tree, glinting and glowing in the shafts of light peering down through cracks in the stone above. No one knows of how such a beautiful thing could prosper in a such a place, yet the faithful have always traveled far to view upon it's pristine leaves. There are even tales that the tree was born from the joyous tears of Halla herself, and within it's bark and leaves is a hidden, pure healing gift that has been left untouched. Those who believe leave offerings for the Mother's blessing at it's base, from tokens of hair and coins, to trinkets, and even bone.

The Moon of Nevermore

The sacred land of Nevermore is a place where the sun does not rise. It is blocked always by the giant moon that hangs lowly over the strange desert. In a land that is always night, the creatures have learned to adapt and even the water flows differently. Natives whisper of great things that hide in the darkness, and find comfort in the moon's ominous glow.

There is a warning to all that may find themselves in the shadowed depths of Nevermore. Be wary of the dark, for even the light of the moon may play tricks on you.

Hallasdor

Deep within the jungle of Ard Maleficar, there is a waterfall that tumbles from the heights of the mount into a lake that feeds the ocean. South of the roaring falls, hidden behind it the water, there is a colossal door nestled into the Mountain. It is old and overgrown, covered in vines and plants, though it's most curious feature are the sporadic nails and planks jammed into it from the outside. Flowers bloom through the wood and moss and stone, yet despite it's beauty, there is a shadow that has fallen across this place. It is clear at first glance that something lives within the mountain.

Something that must not ever be unleashed.

Currently, Hallasdor is locked. Although, should one venture too close, some say they have heard rumbles of something ancient from behind the mossy stone.

The Sunken City of Aeramore

Guardian of the Deep

The Abyssal Leviathans have long since been the guardians of the ocean. However, it is rumored that Queen Maeve has been a keeper of one such leviathan; a beast of untold strength and daunting power that could quake even the farthest seas. Since the time of the city's sinking, there have been few rumors of the queen hiding such a creature within the dungeons, waiting to be unleashed upon the unsuspecting shores of Nordlys, should things fall out of favor for those who call the ocean their home.

Currently, these rumors have not been confirmed. Although, these stories have yet to quell King Hessander's own paranoia of Queen Maeve of Aeramore.

The Serpent Graves

Far from where waves crash in the heart of the Ocean of Neverwas lays a shallow grave — shallow not in soil but in water. The sea here is calm and still, turquoise and crystalline, providing a perfect but terrifying view of the great Leviathan skeletons that wind for several miles. The bones of the great sea serpents are now a relic, fearsome to some but beautiful to others. Sea wayfarers treasure this holy ground, never sailing or swimming within these sacred waters. Only the ignorant, and misinformed, dare disturb these spirits where they eternally rest.

Crownsbird

Known by the natives as the Soul of the Sea, the Crownsbird is a story of legend. Sea wayfarers whisper it's tales, and land dwellers that venture too close to the water may hear their words spoken. Sailors and oceanfolk alike know of the Crownsbird in their hearts. They say that this mighty beast is the king of the shallows birds, golden and teal in plume. Unlike his kin, the Crownsbird is far larger, near dragon-like in size. He is the mighty beast of the ocean blue, the Protector of those who have the sea in their souls.

Believed to hail from Father Cosmos' blessing as ruler of the skies and Mother Halla's compassion, the Soul of the Sea once called the great towers of Aeramore's castle home. However, as the city fell beneath the waves, the Crownsbird slowly vanished from mortal eyes. In several hundred years, he has been missing, but his story is still alive.

Currently, the Crownsbird has not been seen for a five hundred years, and is no more than a legend among sea-fairing folk.
